My name is Joey and I am like many Americans in our day and time... I struggled with being obese....
I know experientially what it feels like physically and mentally. I also know the decision process that one has to go through first mentally and emotionally in order to make a REAL change in order to not only loose the weight but keep it off.
I had weight loss surgery on May 12th, 2005. My surgery took place at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida. On my surgery date I weighed 392lbs and had a BMI of 53. I was considered super morbid obese.
One day I was sitting at a Marlins game and I couldn't even fit in the seat. Then I saw a father and his sons four rows down. The kids wore a shirt saying "our first opening day with daddy". I realized I could not see having a child in my life anytime soon. Who can play with their kids from a wheelchair? Because that is where I was heading if I didn't smarten up.
One the day I ended on a respirator for nine days because my body went into anaphylactic shock and I couldn't recover. I was weighed on the hospital bed and I was 358lbs and I found out I had hypertension and sleep apnea. I tried to change my life by dieting. And of course like many others I had no luck. I actually gained weight.
That's when I decided I needed to make a change in my life or I would end up with no life at all. My life hasn't been the same since.
I started to researched weight loss surgery as an option. I met people who had weight loss surgery and I looked into different surgeons. I started to keep a weight loss surgery book ,I took this book everywhere with me. I photocopied it and left a copy at work, in my car, bedroom, and bathroom. I then started to condition myself mentally for what would be my normal eating routine once I had the surgery. I started eating smaller and not eating and drinking at the same time. This made it allot easier for me.. I also tried different protein shakes and bars. I even got into a serious regiment of going to the gym. For once in my life I was stepping it up and taking control.
It has been over 2 years since my surgery and I have learned and accomplished a lot. .
After 2 years of eating right and exercising, I weigh 200lbs and I am in great health. My BMI is now 27. I make sure I get all my vitamin and protein requirements in and I religiously go to the gym 5 days a week. Some people replace eating with drinking, drugs, or gambling. My addiction is my health. I love going to the gym and taking care of myself.
I am now a certified personal trainer.
Since loosing the weight, I now enjoy not only fitting in that seat at the baseball game but living life.
